Harry Styles performs unreleased Liam Payne tribute song at Madison Square Garden

· October 18, 2026 · 2 min read

Harry Styles surprised fans at Madison Square Garden by performing a previously unheard song written in memory of his late One Direction bandmate Liam Payne. The performance, titled What Is Enough, came during a sold-out stop on his Together, Together tour residency, falling on the second anniversary of Payne’s death.

Addressing the crowd on Friday night, Styles reflected on the people who helped shape his career before turning to the loss of his friend. “I feel incredibly lucky to get to play these shows here in New York, and this building means a lot to me,” he told the audience. “There are so many people in my life, friends and people that I’ve worked with that I wouldn’t have been able to do this without. And two years ago today, I lost one of those friends.”

The remark drew cheers from fans, many of whom were hearing the new track for the first time. Dressed in a royal blue jumper with a red collar, Styles encouraged the crowd to look out for one another, telling them, “I’m sure a lot of you have been through similar things. I hope you haven’t. But really, it’s just about looking after each other.” He went on to thank the wider circle of people who had shaped his life, saying there were “so many more people who have touched my life in such special ways.”

An emotional debut

Before picking up his guitar, Styles asked the crowd’s permission with characteristic warmth: “I’m gonna play you a song I wrote for my friend about two years ago, if that’s all right.” The request was met with applause and cheering before he began performing the track solo on guitar, with his band later joining in with a melodic accompaniment to the reflective, emotionally charged lyrics. Fans who captured the moment on social media described the song as “beautiful” in posts shared after the show.

Payne died in October 2024 after falling from a hotel balcony in Argentina, a loss that shook the One Direction fanbase worldwide. Styles, who left the group to launch a solo career in 2017, has since built one of the biggest followings in pop music: his debut album and single both reached number one in the UK, and 2022’s Harry’s House earned him both a Grammy and a Brit Award.
